Quidi Vidi Village History and Folklore Project
Project Description
In 2006 the City of St. John’s acquired the property at 10 Maple View Place, located in the heart of the Quidi Vidi Village – a historic outport within city limits. The property at 10 Maple View Place replaced the former Tucker Premises which had served for many years as the fishing premises for Eli Tucker, the previous property owner. The premises and its fishing history are key elements in the historic outport fishing village of Quidi Vidi. First settled in the sixteenth century the Village played an important role in the battle of the French and English over Newfoundland.
In its research and planning for economic and cultural development, the City of St. John’s identified Quidi Vidi Village as an area with great potential as a cultural destination. With the intention of giving new, creative energy to the Quidi Vidi area, a concept was set in motion for this property to make it part tourist destination and part support to emerging craftspeople. Ultimately, this new building will house this “craft studio business incubator”, a multi-purpose space, a visitor information centre, and a community development office.
With the development of the craft studio business incubator the City of St. John's is interested in including the history of Quidi Vidi Village in some fashion within the building.
Towards that end, we are wondering if there would be a researcher from Memorial University of Newfoundland who would have an interest in undertaking research about the history, folklore and oral history of the Village with a goal of some of the collected information, images, maps etc. from the research featured in displays and exhibits within the new property.
The research might also include the Village's important heritage structures; walking trails, including the Grand Concourse Walking Trail and the East Coast Trail; as well as links to provincial and national historic sites such as the Quidi Vidi Battery and Signal Hill National Historic Site of Canada.
Aside from the craft studio business incubator, the building will also house offices of the Quidi Vidi Village Foundation. The Foundation would welcome the research from Memorial and could form part of a permanent collection within their space in the building.
