Nutraceutical Research on Local Berries in Central Labrador for the Development of New Activities in the Region
Project Description
Objective:
To research berries in Central Labrador in terms of their health and nutrition benefits with the possibility of creating new activities in the region
Background:
The health benefits of certain berries have been researched and used in a growing global nutraceutical industry. The opportunity for research in Central Labrador on local berry varieties holds much potential. Nutritional benefits found in local berries could lead to new activities for the region. Using research on the berries, local groups could help develop enterprises, such as berry picking tours, jam making, and other activities to learn from tradition bearers who have used berries for health. These activities would be useful for those living in the region's communities, especially seniors, and could have an appeal for tourists.
Roles for Memorial University:
Research berries in Central Labrador, including the nutraceutical benefits, historical uses and possible new activities to use the berries and research findings.
