Sustainable Craft and Tourism Product Development for the Great Northern Peninsula (GNP) Limestone Barrens

Project Description
Objective:

To explore opportunities for sustainable craft and tourism products related to the GNP Limestone Barrens.

Background:

Scientists have identified the Limestone Barrens on the GNP of Newfoundland as a "rare and fragile ecosystem." The Limestone Barrens Habitat Stewardship Program (LBHSP) in conjunction with its many partners, aims to protect this area. These barrens, considered the 'hotspot of plant diversity in the province, host three endemic plant Species at Risk. Goals of the program include stewardship, education, awareness, and ecotourism for a sustainable future for communities on the GNP.

The program proposes to assist local residents with the development of sustainable craft and tourism products related to the theme of the Limestone Barrens and stewardship of the program. These products would help increase awareness of the region and build on a history of artists and crafts people who are using the region as inspiration for their work.

Roles for Memorial University:

To explore and develop opportunities for sustainable craft items and tourism products related to the Limestone Barrens region of the province and linked to the mandate of the LBHSP. Working with the LBHSP manager, art and craft opportunities would be developed and partnerships formed to create tourism products for the region.
