Summary
Regional Workshops offer the opportunity for Memorial University faculty, staff and students to meet with regional stakeholders, in order to discuss topics of mutual interest. The purpose of a Regional Workshop is to explore ways of creating sustainable social and economic regions, and to identify possible future opportunities for research, teaching and outreach.

On May 9-10, 2007, the Harris Centre held a Memorial Presents/Regional Workshop at Labrador City, NL. The Regional Workshop is normally preceded by an event entitled Memorial Presents; this is a thoughtful discussion of a topic of importance to the region or zone in which the events are held. The Memorial Presents session on the night of 9 May was entitled “Where Will the Workers Come From?: Avoiding a Labour Shortage in Labrador West”. The keynote speaker for the evening’s forum was Dr. Doug May of Memorial University’s Department of Economics. The panelists for the event included Keith Storey, Department of Geography, MUN; Heather Bruce-Veitch, IOC Human Resources Manager; and Wince Martin, Wabush Mines. This event was attended by 84 people.

The Regional Workshop, held on 10 May, was attended by over 65 participants. It showcased 35 new opportunities for research, teaching and outreach, grouped under the broad subject headings of Labour Markets and Social Development; Mining and Metallurgy Clustering; and Winter Tourism.
